Job Description - Materials Coordinator/Purchasing Assistant

Position Purpose:

Perform various tasks to support purchasing, material control, and related activities at VTI.


Principal Duties:

The following are the principal duties of the Materials Coordinator/Purchasing Assistant:

  • Organizes and replenishes stock of various materials and components
  • Monitors and maintains adequate on hand levels of standard materials, components, and operating supplies and submits Purchase Requests for same
  • Utilizes research and computer skills to identify and locate appropriate suppliers and/or products based on the needs of internal VTI customers
  • Gathers pricing, lead times, product specifications, and other information from potential suppliers in support of the Purchasing Agent
  • Interfaces and navigates though the Purchasing, Products, and Orders Modules of VTI’s in house database system
  • Executes purchases using VTI’s in house database system (will train) while adhering to VTI’s Quality Program using various methods, such as telephone, e-mail, and supplier websites in support of the Purchasing Agent
  • Assists the Purchasing Agent, as required, with expediting late purchase orders
  • Creates, edits, and maintains spreadsheets as necessary to analyze costs and other factors
  • Operates a VTI vehicle to pick up purchases from local suppliers and performs other errands as required
  • Assists in shipping/receiving area when needed (will train) including unloading of raw material trucks using forklifts, pallet jacks, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment
  • Maintains and replenishes VTI’s stock of commonly used tools, issues tools to employees and logs in toolbox inventory spreadsheet as required
  • Conducts toolbox inventory counts and updates inventory spreadsheets accordingly

Requirements:

  • Minimum High School diploma with preferred additional continuing education
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience within a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to adapt in a fast paced environment where priorities can change quickly
  • Good basic math, verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of general hardware and raw materials
  • Proficient using computers, such as doing web research, making purchases on-line utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, and the ability to learn how to use VTI’s in-house business management system
  • Possesses a valid TN driver’s license with a clean motor vehicle driving record in the last 24 months
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work environment
  • Works safely and cooperatively with co-workers and customers
  • Willingness to perform other tasks outside of normal duties
